Sanctuary Animals

Kitty and K-9 Connection -- A New Leash On Life

From time to time an animal comes into foster that for one reason or another becomes a sanctuary pet. This may be for medical reasons, because the animal has been through several trial adoptions and returned, they may be feral, skittish or elderly. Because of our commitment to these rescued animals, those that end up as a sanctuary will remain to live out their lives. Occasionally, someone will inquire as to adoption of a sanctuary, and that is certainly possible, or if you would like to sponsor one of our sanctuary animals, let us know and we will acknowledge your sponsorship under that pet.

For $10 a month, you can sponsor one of the animals listed below for as long as you like. This sponsorship will help pay for food, medical needs, litter, etc. If you are interested in sponsoring one of our sanctuary animals, please contact Cindy at kittyandk-9@gci.net.

FRED** Initially Fred was a kitten in rescue. He was adopted by a loving family with his brother, but unfortunately allergy issues resulted in their return to rescue. Both were fostered together for about a year and then again adopted...together...the Fred and Barney team remained in-tact. They were in placement together for over a year when their new adoptive mother decided to return to Florida to live. The vet advised her not to take Fred because he had a "heart murmur". Their mom was heart-broken and decided to return both cats to rescue. After many tears and conversations, it was decided that Barney would relocate with his mom and Fred would return to his original, loving foster home. Both cats were bonded to each other, but Barney was very bonded to his mom...Fred did well in his foster home and his foster family was familiar. Fred was very sad for awhile without his brother, but eventually adjusted. It was discovered that Fred has severe asthma and has to use an inhaler. Due to his medical issues, it was determined he would remain a sanctuary cat and live with his foster family for the rest of his life. He has a family to call his own, who will love him, care for him and never put him through all this transition again...health-wise, this is the only option for him. Kitty and K-9 will continue to support Fred with his medical issues...any and all donations to his care and health are appreciated more than words can say.

PRINCE* - Okay...I admit, I do look a bit pitiful, but do not let that fool you. After all my medical issues were addressed, I am a healthy and happy nine year old Chihuahua who absolutely adores lap-time and warm blankets. You may wonder about my medical issues...well, I have a level four heart-murmur (yes, this will shorten my life), one of my front declaws was removed due to potential cancer issues, a cyst was removed from my hip, my spine is slightly fuzed so I walk a bit hunched (but it does not hinder me from walking, running or jumping), during my dental it was discovered my jaw is weak from being broken (requiring soft food) and I have hair loss (assumed to be due to poor nutrition). Thru' it all, I have continued to be a prancing, happy and loving little guy...how can I complain, I finally got the medical treatment I should have had quite some time ago...now I have the chance to be "healthier and happy". I was owner released to rescue because no one wanted me...I had been passed around...I don't know what happened to my original owners. I am doing well, but would really love to have my own home (without small children), lots of love, snuggles and cuddles, healthy food and maybe a non-intrusive smaller doggy buddy. I am kennel trained, have good house manners, do fairly well with other dogs, cats are okay, not real barky, sleeps on the bed rather comfortably, active and healthy. I would really thrive in an adult home with lots of love and someone who will not be embarrassed to be seen with a "pitiful" looking little guy...looks aren't everything you know! I have lots of love to share with you...my heart is huge! I am dreaming of the day I can begin my life with that right someone who will love me inspite of my looks, health issues and age!

MIKE* Okay...I may be a bit senior (approximately nine years old), but I am very active and lots of fun. A toy Fox Terrier who was also at Animal Control and very fearful. Rescue was my only option...and what a challenge this has been for me. I am a typical terrier who gets along with dogs my size but has to boss the bigger dogs and torment the cat...I am familiar with the squirt bottle now. Qualities include kennel trained, fair house manners, playful, cuddly but not intrusive, snuggler in bed, not very barky, happy to have lap time but the back of the couch is okay too, seem fragile but am actually hardy, full of life and curiousity, a bit pushy for people food (alto' not real successful) and willing to endure kisses. Living in my foster home has been fine, but I am truly desiring my own home (without small children)...I look forward to bonding with a family who will love me for a lifetime. Keep in mind that "senior" may be physical but not always a state of mind...I believe I am still fairly youthful. The joys of life keep me happy and entertained. I know I can do the same for you if you find room in your heart for me.

CHANCE* came into rescue when he was 6 weeks old. He was badly frostbitten, underweight and extremely dehydrated. Weighing in at 14 ounces, this terrified little boy wasn't long for this world in his present situation. He lost one ear and all but two toes and most of his tail due to frostbite. Continued medical will be on-going, but this cute, cuddly little boy with have long term problems with his feet, but he will always have a loving, lifetime home with his foster mom.

SANTANA* is a DSH black cat with specks of white fur throughout and is estimated to be about 8-11+ years of age. This 18# hunk-a-hunk of burning love, is extremely vocal. Had been a stray for awhile, fending for himself while a kind neighbor tried to keep him fed. The ferals in the neighborhood keep picking fights with him and she became concerned for his safety. Once he is comfortable is his surroundings he will follow you around like a puppy dog. Since he can't be trusted not to get outside (as his last walkabout, he was gone for a month before he was traced back to me via his microchip), his foster mom decided he can stay here since he seems to be so happy.

BARNEY** is a DSH black and white Japanese Bobtail mix who was rescued from a cat colony on the outskirts of Spenard in winter of 2007/08. He has the cutest, most perfect bobtail according to the breed standards, and huge round eyes. He is a sweet boy, loves to be petted and talks a lot. Loves to play with kitty toys. He is the shadow of one of my cats, Saturn. I guess that’s how he came to be the tamest of the 3 cats I have from this colony. He does not like to be held or picked up. Barney will stay as a sanctuary cat unless I can find the perfect home for him.

KRIS** came from the same colony as Barney. (We rescued him around Christmas 2007, hence the name Kris Kringle)He is a DMH black tabby Japanese Bobtail mix. I got him as a kitten, approx 4 months old. Big hopes of taming him were diminished quickly. I could pet and hold him when I had him caged in the beginning. He then started to bite me (not real hard) every time he was put back in his cage. He quickly went into a bedroom with 4 other cats, and now won’t let me pick him up or pet him 99% of the time. I can get about 2’ away from him and did rub his tummy a few times, til he remembered he wasn’t supposed to like me. He does love to play and is social with the other cats.

CARLA** came from the same colony as Barney & Kris. Rescued in winter of 2007/08. She is most likely Barneys’ sibling. Black & white DSH with not much of a tail. More manx than Japanese bobtail type cat. Huge round eyes that look scared all the time. She will come within 2’ of me, but will not let me touch her. The only time I could do so was when I wrapped her in a towel to take her out of her cage and put her in the cat room. She loves to play and sleep on top of the tallest cat tree where she can keep her eyes on everything that goes on. I have a bunch of the nylon foldable cubes in their room, and she loves to run thru them. When I get home from work at night, they are all folded up from being jumped on.

PEBBLES* is a DLH black tortoise shell approximately 4 years of age. Has been in foster since she was about 5 weeks of age. She is a very outgoing, independent, curious and aloof kitty that does well with other cats and dogs. Went into trial placement, but was so unhappy there...she cried all the time, her potential adopter brought her back, as she appears to be extremely bonded to several of the cats in her foster home

TOPAZ is a 6 year old short haired tabby mix. She was adopted out of Animal Control when she was 6 months of age. Her new owner noticed her tail just hung and she would find small amounts of poop in her catbed. The vet determined that someone had probably pulled her tail, most likely while trying to catch her, to the point that she acquired irreversible nerve damage. From time to time, as she sleeps, she passes poop. Due to this medical problem, she is considered unadoptable. Because of her tremendous personality, outgoing nature and the fact that her sanctuary home can deal with this, Topaz will live out her life being the personal greeter to all who come to adopt another cat from rescue.

SMOKIE BOB was rescued from animal control a little over two years ago. He is a very loving happy go lucky 9 year old dachshund. The day he came out of animal control he had no hair, was a flaming red oozing scratchy mess with badly infected ears and anal glands. Smokie Bob was a little chubby and was named after a shishka bob. But that extra wait also gave him severe back problems that he almost didn't overcome. After several trips to the vet and dermatologist he has hair and can walk without pain . We learned he has several food and air born allergies. With on going medicated baths and a prescription diet/diet and paying special attention to his skin and back Smokie will get the opportunity to enjoy the rest of his life with his sanctuary family.
