Sanctuary Animals

Kitty and K-9 Connection -- A New Leash On Life

From time to time an animal comes into foster that for one reason or another becomes a sanctuary pet. This may be for medical reasons, because the animal has been through several trial adoptions and returned, they may be feral, skittish or elderly. Because of our commitment to these rescued animals, those that end up as a sanctuary will remain to live out their lives. Occasionally, someone will inquire as to adoption of a sanctuary, and that is certainly possible, or if you would like to sponsor one of our sanctuary animals, let us know and we will acknowledge your sponsorship under that pet.

For $10 a month, you can sponsor one of the animals listed below for as long as you like. This sponsorship will help pay for food, medical needs, litter, etc. If you are interested in sponsoring one of our sanctuary animals, please contact Cindy at kittyandk-9@gci.net.

HANK is a 14 year old Min Pin who was dumped at animal control, who could > do that to a senior dog? Once rescued we discovered this little guy had > real bad separation anxiety and had signs that he had been abused. He had > a broken jaw that we had wired back together and an old injury that did > not heal right in his leg. He also was diagnosed with cushings disease and > will require ongoing medication to treat. This very sweet old man will > live out the rest of his life in his sanctuary home where he will receive lots of love, care and lap time.

SUNDANCE (now called SCRAT) came into rescue awhile back. His situation left him a complete mess; medically and physically. Well, the little guy has patches of hair that has finally grown back (a touch of character), both eyes are not bright and healthy, he still suffers from severe heart problems (which has not slowed him down) and he still sports a bit of an attitude. He may have a galloping heart murmur...which is not good, but he is enjoying his life with Pete, Lisa and his other doggie siblings. (Remember: due to the limited time this little guy has, his foster home chose to hospice him...with lots of love and medical attention.) He had a sad story once...but that is all in his past and he is very happy now. Occasionally Scrat hangs out with his foster parents at VCA Bering Sea Vet Clinic. It is fun to watch him play, bark, chase things, show a bit of attitude and just enjoy life. He will definitely leave this world knowing he was truly cared for, loved and happy.

TOPAZ is a 4 year old short haired tabby mix. She was adopted out of Animal Control when she was 6 months of age. Her new owner noticed her tail just hung and she would find small amounts of poop in her catbed. The vet determined that someone had probably pulled her tail, most likely while trying to catch her, to the point that she acquired irreversible nerve damage. From time to time, as she sleeps, she passes poop. Due to this medical problem, she is considered unadoptable. Because of her tremendous personality, outgoing nature and the fact that her sanctuary home can deal with this, Topaz will live out her life being the personal greeter to all who come to adopt another cat from rescue.

SASHA* To adopt me would be wonderful for both you and me. I am a senior lady, approximately ten years old, Pom mix who was adopted five years ago. When my new mom was injured and had to move to assisted living, I was returned to rescue. I did not expect this change in my life, so am a bit surprised at my circumstances. I am extremely quiet, not intrusive, loving, okay with other dogs but don't like them to get into my space, cuddly, loveable and lonely. I have so much to give and want to spend the rest of my life in a quiet home (without small children) who will appreciate and love me. Seems that is a bit difficult to find for senior dogs...but I know there is a home for me. I am kennel trained, have fair house manners, a bit chubby, cute, will require grooming occasionally and healthy. Please consider me for your own...I know the rewards will be great for us!

SAMANTHA returned to rescue when her adoptive mom unexpectedly left the state for personal reasons. She is an adorable, twelve year old Cairn/ Scottie mix. Initially we intended to place Samantha and we pursued that avenue. Recently, Samantha began having seizures and went on medical hold. Her foster mom, veterinarian Kathy Doty, chose to keep Samantha for the remainder of her life. Samantha is truly devoted to Kathy and probably would not transition well at this point (change could definitely increase her seizure activity). Samantha will require medication and blood-work, as well as general care. We have chosen to keep our sweet and funny Ms. Samantha as a sanctuary foster. We thank Kathy for allowing Samantha to stop bouncing in and out of rescue and giving Ms. Samantha the rest of her life to be a terrific companion and friend to one she already loves.
