KITTY & K-9 CONNECTION IN REMEMBRANCE OF

In Remembrance of our loved ones, whether human or furry, they make such a large impact on our lives for whatever amount of time we are blessed with their presence.

SCRAT is now with the Angels. He started being more depressed, his appetite was waxing, and his breathing was becoming more labored. We brought him in for labs and rads, and things were not good, it looked as though tumors and invaded his heart, and abdomen. We feel his absence deeply, however he is alive in our hearts. He is a great little guy.

UZI HALTER MILES died May 17, 2008. She was 15 years old. Uzi was born to Vern Halter and Susan Whiton but Vern decided early on that she had short legs. No one told him that he had short legs and he was still on the "A" team. She was sold and ended up at Larry Carroll's. Uzi began her illustrative mushing career leading Larry to a 7th and 8th place finish in the Yukon Quest. She went on to finish 20th in lead in the Iditarod as a leased dog, and lead Carla Kelly's otherwise leaderless team to a 38th place finish in 2003. Carla's team of dogs half Uzi's age and twice her speed refused to go on two occasions on the Yukon, restarting only due to Uzi's insistence. Uzi never disappointed her last musher, Melinda Miles, leading her to all of her Iditarod qualifiers. When asked by her then mentor Lynda Plettner, "who is in charge of this dog team???" Melinda answerd "uh, Uzi." (Lynda was looking for the answer me, the musher, but who would I be kidding?") Uzi has passed over the rainbow bridge and Melinda and Suzanne can only lament as Tam Lin did "you have taken the finest Knight in my company." Treat her well. She has earned her rest. Melinda (and Suzanne) Miles

WOODY, a rescue favorite, died of heart failure March 5. Though he had deformed front legs, a deformed sterum and fluid in the chest, it did not stop him from living a good life for the short time he was on earth. Woody was 11 months of age when he passed away and will be missed by his foster mom who loved him very much. He was always one of the first cats to say hello when he saw you and his handicap didn't slow him down one bit. His previous owners, who dumped him off at Animal Control, will never know the treasure they deserted.

CUBBY found himself in rescue when his owner relocated to Alaska to find a husband. Once she found that person, she decided she could not keep her twelve year old dog. Lost and confused, this little guy went into foster. He was adopted by a wonderful lady, Sue Firmin. His life changed completely. In his final years, he had more adventures than most of us have in a lifetime. He was even in an airplane accident where he saved his momma's life. Our Cubby passed away on March 21st. He knew he was loved and cherished. He had endeared so many to himself with his quirky and loveable personality. He was so lucky to find such a fantastic mom and have such a full life. He will forever be in our hearts. We thank Sue for giving him so much love and such a terrific life. We know you will miss him Sue...you two were made for each other. Hugs to you!!

We send our thoughts and sympathy to Bev Simmons who recently lost her Poodle, who was both her friend and companion. Altho' we always know the time will come when we will be separated by death, it is never easy...and the loss is devastating. Bev, may you be warmed by your memories and knowledge that what you shared together was for a lifetime...even tho' you are separated.

Once upon a time, there was a little tiny Yorkie found on the railroad tracks...scared and running loose. He was scooped up and taken to a vet clinic by a very kind man. Raggy, matted, bad teeth, scared to death, this little guy needed lots of love and help. No one claimed him...so medical treatment began. It just so happened that a wonderful doggy mom had recently lost her baby...and was our vet's friend and client. This wonderful doggy mom, Nikki Stokoe, was asked if she would consider this pitiful little dog as a potential new addition to her home. Without hesitation, she arrived at the vet clinic to meet "Kramer". Once in her arms, we could not pry him away...it was adoration and love at first sight. Kramer was placed with Nikki and Bill right away...really there was no other option...Nikki had her arms (and heart) wrapped around this little guy for life. She changed his name to "Mykey"...perfect..."my key to love". Mykey blossomed and developed quite the personality...what a guy! He had a happy few years, but then began to become ill. Recently, Mykey passed away...his passing was devastating for all who knew him. We will always share loving and fond memories of Mykey with Nikki and Bill. Mykey could not have been more loved or happier. Thank you Nikki and Bill for giving so much to Mykey...and allowing him to give so much back to you. We send our love and sympathy...and hugs.

PUSSERS succumbed to kidney disease 1/10/08. He was 18.5 years old, and lived with me for 4.5 years of that life. He was my constant companion, lap & pillow kitty. I'm sure the squirrels that used to bravely come up to him when he was outside on the deck will miss him. He was a great friend, and will be dearly missed. Sue

On Thanksgiving day our friend Tish Fitzgerald sadly said good-bye to one of her very loved and cherished cats, Zepher. In memory of Zepher and her long-time friendship with Tish, Janet Mischler donated to the Kitty and K-9 orphans. Holidays are tough enough without losing one that we so dearly love. Tish has always been one of the best cat moms and Zepher had a great life. We celebrate their memories and send Tish our deepest sympathies…and love.

In Memory of Our Little Rescue - Cagney: This is a difficult remembrance because I rescued this little guy and then unintentionally made a BAD decision on his behalf. He was a fun, spunky and happy (although protective) little, one year old Chihuahua (black and tan). He was one of the best lap warmers, absolutely adorable and oh so cuddly. I entrusted Cagney to someone I believed would foster him safely…tragically that was not the case. It is a long and very sad story…and I am still reeling from the situation and heartbroken at his loss. This is Kitty and K-9’s first “death” of this type in rescue…one that was preventable. I will always remember Cagney…how much I loved and enjoyed him. I will also remember that I made a wrong choice that cost him his life…and that burden will always be mine. Rescuing, fostering and adopting always involve trust…sometimes it is difficult to know what to believe and who to trust. For me to make such a wrong decision that ended such a wonderful little guy’s life is so very difficult to come to terms with in my own heart. To Cagney I can only say…I deeply apologize…I miss you…and I love you!! Hugs and fond memories…Your momma Carol

Last fall one of our little buddies, Kelly, passed away. Even though it has been awhile, he is sooo missed by everyone who knew him, especially his mom and dad, Connie and Karl. A little reminiscing seems to be in order…smile. Kelly was initially adopted from Friends of Pets…a naughty little Poodle boy. Connie and Karl weren’t sure they were the right parents for him, so they attempted finding him another home. That did not work…they were in love with the little boogie. Kelly stayed…filling their hearts and laps…making them smile daily over his funny little ways and they learned to overlook that he was naughty. Kelly was devoted to tennis balls…he even slept with them. He would bark and twirl at the same time. He had a special “girlfriend” pillow that no one was allowed to touch. He loved to go…altho’ he could not be still in the car. He was comical and very entertaining. After Karl retired, travel became part of their plans…but what to do with Kelly. A plan was developed…he would spend most of his life being spoiled by his parents and then off to doggy camp at Carol and Bruce’s. He had fun with the rescue dogs, but was always thankful when his parents returned, “rescued” him and took him home…he loved being “spoiled”. As his senior years progressed, he went to stay with Marilyn and Larry Hawn for extra attention and love while his parents were traveling. Seems this little guy touched many hearts…he endeared himself to all of us. When his time to cross the Rainbow Bridge came…he did not go alone…he was showered with love and tears. His passing broke his momma’s heart…she has an “empty lap” that Kelly always kept warm. We have fond and fun memories of Kelly…who could come up with some of the strangest things to do which made us laugh (like bark at the ceiling fan and twirl in circles at the same time until he was too dizzy to stand). Connie and Karl we know you are still struggling with Kelly’s death. We send you our love and hugs…and we celebrate his memories with you. You adopted one of the funniest little guys ever…he was always a bit naughty…but that did not matter. Kelly was a joy and treasure. He had a great home and a great life…you two did that for him. He thanks you and will meet you on the Rainbow Bridge…he will SEE you coming…smile.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals that had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.... - Anonymous
